As an intellectual and physical challenge, it requires patience and the mindset that thinks: ‘I got it wrong this time, but next time I will be better.’
Nobody is too old (or young) to learn the piano — I teach people from age 4 right up to their 70s.
For young learners, I use my own colourful teaching materials — which make learning fun. One 6 year-old, for example, is learning a beginner’s piece I wrote especially for her to accompany the poem Now I am Six, by A.A. Milne. Children can share a lesson if they are of a similar playing standard.
Older learners may want to choose their own music provided it develops musical and technical skills.
In one-to-one lessons, we can each have a piano – which speeds up the amount of material we can cover during a lesson.
Having two pianos is also ideal for students who wish to practise duets.
Practising on a baby grand makes playing a grand piano, in an exam, less stressful.
No thank you
You don’t have to study for an exam. And of course you can measure your progress in other ways than exams, if you would like to.
Yes please
I use two exam boards, the ABRSM and Trinity – the choice usually depends on your musical focus. Both boards offer the same number of UCAS points. I can teach you music theory either as part of your piano lesson, or in a separate lesson.
Learn some music theory and you will not be puzzled for long!
Why not try your hand at composing …?
