4 benefits of learning the piano

(as described by my pupils)

  • For your enjoyment and pleasure

  • To develop your self-confidence

  • To develop resilience, and the determination to overcome obstacles

  • As an intellectual and physical challenge, it requires patience and the mindset that thinks: ‘I got it wrong this time, but next time I will be better.’

What will my piano lessons be like?

I believe that learners should play music that they enjoy and which touches them personally, so my lessons are tailored to you and your interests.

Nobody is too old (or young) to learn the piano — I teach people from age 4 right up to their 70s.

  • For young learners, I use my own colourful teaching materials — which make learning fun. One 6 year-old, for example, is learning a beginner’s piece I wrote especially for her to accompany the poem Now I am Six, by A.A. Milne. Children can share a lesson if they are of a similar playing standard.

  • Older learners may want to choose their own music provided it develops musical and technical skills.

Two pianos to benefit from

A Kawai baby grand and an upright piano

  • In one-to-one lessons, we can each have a piano – which speeds up the amount of material we can cover during a lesson.

  • Having two pianos is also ideal for students who wish to practise duets.

  • Practising on a baby grand makes playing a grand piano, in an exam, less stressful.

Will I study for an exam, or not?

This choice is entirely yours.

No thank you
You don’t have to study for an exam. And of course you can measure your progress in other ways than exams, if you would like to.

Yes please
I use two exam boards, the ABRSM and Trinity – the choice usually depends on your musical focus. Both boards offer the same number of UCAS points. I can teach you music theory either as part of your piano lesson, or in a separate lesson.

  • Learn some music theory and you will not be puzzled for long!

  • Why not try your hand at composing …?

 Feedback from my students

I listen to pop rather than classical music in my free time. Susan helped widen my knowledge of the different musical genres needed for Grade 7 AURAL ABRSM. I lessons I listened to several examples of a musical period. We are now working on Grade 8 aural.

I am a mature pupil. Sue has been tutoring for a little over a year. I feel that I have improved greatly under Sue’s guidance and direction. She selects popular pieces for me to learn that also help improve my technique and rhythm. I thoroughly enjoy each lesson and Sue’s gentle approach.
— Mature learner
I really enjoy learning piano, and Mrs. Ogden is a kind teacher who is understanding of schoolwork and exams and makes lessons fun. She supports and helps me which is improving my confidence as I’m not worried to ask for help. I look forward to my lessons each week.

Sue has been teaching my children piano since they were 5 years old, six years ago. I am very pleased with her teaching and my children love her. She is very patient, kind to them and looks after them very well during the lessons. She also picks them up from school on occasion for their lessons. My children have achieved distinctions in their grade exams and in a local music festival. They have impressed their teachers and school friends with their performances in school. So many thanks to Sue for not only teaching them music but also for boosting their confidence.
